Five Indications Your Clutch Is Going Out

The average lifespan of a clutch varies widely in depends on how you drive. For example, if you ride the clutch frequently, you will reduce its lifespan. York Tire & Auto Service is going to list the signs that your clutch is going out below. At a minimum, we may be able to resolve the problem by adjusting your clutch. This being said, we may also need to replace the clutch if it has reached the end of its life.

1. Acceleration Loss

You may notice that your vehicle is having trouble accelerating if the clutch is going bad. This is because the clutch is responsible for transferring power between the engine and transmission. It cuts the power to the engine and routes it to the transmission to turn the drivetrain. If the clutch is unable to do this, your vehicle will not accelerate or have difficulties accelerating because the wheels aren’t turning.

2. Burning Clutch

A burning clutch will release hot odors into your vehicle’s cabin. When a clutch burns, it is slipping out of engagement. A slipping clutch is an indication that the internal mechanisms that make up the clutch have worn down and need to be replaced. If we can, we will rebuild your clutch by replacing the worn parts. Again, this being said, we may need to replace the entire clutch depending on the damage.

3. Grinding Gears

If your clutch is slipping, you will grind gears when you shift them. The grinding sound that the gears make is an indication that the power has not been transferred completely to the transmission. There is still engine power and, as a consequence, the gears will grind constantly. Once you have mastered driving with the clutch, you shouldn’t grind your gears. If they are grinding, this is a sign that the clutch is going out.

4. Slipping Gears

Your vehicle may also slip out of gear if the clutch is worn. You will know that it has gone into neutral because you will lose power in your RPMs will increase significantly.

5. Spongy Clutch Pedal

Finally, changes in how the clutch pedal feels underneath your foot can also indicate it’s time for an adjustment or replacement. The changes in feel can include softness, sponginess, or a clutch pedal that is extremely difficult to depress.
