Get your car worked on now so you don’t worry about it over Thanksgiving weekend. Even if you aren’t traveling, hitting the stores on Black Friday could add up the miles. Thanksgiving car trouble can ruin your entire weekend, which is why York Tire & Auto Service recommends the following five services.
1. Brake Inspection
A good rule of thumb is to have your brakes inspected every 15,000 miles. This ensures you always have plenty of surface on the brake pads and there aren’t any fluid leaks or problems with the anti-lock system. You may need to stop short to avoid an accident on crowded Thanksgiving weekend roads, i.e. you’ll need great brakes.
2. Coolant Flush
Engine coolant doesn’t need to be flushed and replaced that often, but if you cannot remember the last time you had a radiator flush and fill, we should probably take a look at the system. Stop-and-go traffic over the long weekend can easily overheat your engine, especially if the coolant level is too low or filled with radiator rust.
3. Oil Change
Unless you use synthetic motor oil, every 3,000 miles should be your oil change rule. If you do use synthetic, every 5,000 to 7,500 miles is a good rule. If your Thanksgiving weekend travels will put you past the oil change due-date, have the oil changed now so you know your engine is fully protected throughout your trip.
4. Prevention Check
What we mean by this is an inspection to make sure something unexpected won’t go wrong. A visual inspection of the belts, filters, fluids, gaskets, hoses, and other engine parts helps us find something like a frayed belt so we can fix it before you leave. You never know what could go wrong on the road at the worst possible time.
5. Tire Rotation
Tire rotations are the most effective if you have them done at least every 6,000 miles. Before you head out for the holiday weekend and possibly onto wet and icy roads, let us check your tires to make sure they have plenty of tread and rotate them if it’s time to do so. We can also balance and align the wheels if they need it.
